About Matthew Allton

I am a full time artist based in Coventry.

My work is predominantly realist and I try to capture the beauty and intimate details of the natural world and the everyday objects that can be found around us.

By careful observation of details, I try to translate three-dimensional form into realist depictions of my subjects on a two-dimensional surface.

I do not particularly aim for my work to be photo-realist, and a successful painting for me, should capture the essence of a real subject and its lighting, without losing the brushstrokes that were used to create it.

I work across a diverse range of media, including oil paints, gouache, pastel, charcoal and pencil, choosing the material that I feel is best suited to capturing the unique qualities and lighting of each subject..

Subject matter varies widely as well, but mainly falls into the categories of Still Life, Landscape and Figurative work.

This site currently showcases both finished paintings and drawings and also sketches from the various sketchbooks that I have on the go at any one time.

I am a member of the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists (CWSA) and the Leamington Studio Artists (LSA)
